# python-acoustics

> Part of [LISQM](https://zhenxianli.github.io/LISQM/) (List of Implementations of Sound Quality Metrics), a list of open-source implementations of psychoacoustic metrics. Data as of 2026-10-28. Web page: https://zhenxianli.github.io/LISQM/projects/python-acoustics.html

**Legacy project.** Archived by its authors; its last commit was in August 2023. Kept here for reference. Its code may follow an older edition and may not run with current software.

General Python library for acousticians, published on PyPI as `acoustics`. For this list it is relevant for its tonal audibility and tonal adjustment after ISO 1996-2:2007. Archived in February 2024 and continued as acoustic-toolbox.

## What it implements

| Metric | Edition | Functions | Status | Validation (as stated) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| [Tonal audibility (ISO 1996-2)](https://zhenxianli.github.io/LISQM/metrics/tonal-audibility-iso-1996-2.html) | [ISO 1996-2:2007](https://www.iso.org/standard/41860.html) (tonal audibility and tonal adjustment) | `Tonality`, `tonal_audibility`, `tonal_adjustment` | available | own tests only | Module `acoustics.standards.iso_1996_2_2007`. The `Tonality` docstring uses the title of Annex C ("Objective method for assessing the audibility of tones in noise"), though the code does not name the annex. |

## How it was validated

As reported by the project; LISQM has not run the code. Two implementations that agree can still share the same error.

- [Tonal audibility (ISO 1996-2)](https://zhenxianli.github.io/LISQM/metrics/tonal-audibility-iso-1996-2.html), ISO 1996-2:2007: own tests only
  - A test of the examples in the standard, using DELTA tone files, is commented out.

## Notes

- The successor is [acoustic-toolbox](https://github.com/Universite-Gustave-Eiffel/acoustic-toolbox), which continues the same code.
- It has no loudness, sharpness or roughness modules.

## Before you rely on it

- The repository was archived on 2024-02-07 and is read-only.
- A fix to the default window of the tonality code (2023-08-20) is on the default branch but not in the last PyPI release (0.2.6, July 2022).
- It follows ISO 1996-2:2007, which has been withdrawn; ISO 1996-2:2017 replaced its tonal audibility method with those of Annexes J and K.
