# PsychoBox

> Part of [LISQM](https://zhenxianli.github.io/LISQM/) (List of Implementations of Sound Quality Metrics), a list of open-source implementations of psychoacoustic metrics. Data as of 2026-10-28. Web page: https://zhenxianli.github.io/LISQM/projects/psychobox.html

Desktop application (PySide6 GUI) for playing, editing, filtering and analysing audio. Its psychoacoustic metrics are computed by MoSQITo 1.2.1: Zwicker loudness, ECMA-418-2 loudness, DIN 45692 sharpness, Daniel & Weber roughness and ECMA-418-2 roughness.

## What it implements

| Metric | Edition | Functions | Status | Validation (as stated) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| [Zwicker loudness](https://zhenxianli.github.io/LISQM/metrics/loudness-zwicker.html) | [ISO 532-1:2017](https://www.iso.org/standard/63077.html) (stationary) | `Loudness.loudnessZWK` | available | not stated | Calls `loudness_zwst` of MoSQITo 1.2.1. |
| [Sottek Hearing Model loudness](https://zhenxianli.github.io/LISQM/metrics/loudness-ecma-418-2.html) | [ECMA-418-2:2022 (2nd ed.)](https://ecma-international.org/wp-content/uploads/ECMA-418-2_2nd_edition_december_2022.pdf) (Clause 5 hearing-model loudness only) | `Loudness.loudnessECMA` | available | not stated | Calls `loudness_ecma` of MoSQITo 1.2.1 (ECMA-418-2:2022, Clause 5 only). |
| [Sharpness](https://zhenxianli.github.io/LISQM/metrics/sharpness.html) | [DIN 45692:2009](https://www.dinmedia.de/en/standard/din-45692/117635111) | `Sharpnes_DIN.sharpnessCalculation` | available | not stated | Calls `sharpness_din_st` of MoSQITo 1.2.1 with the DIN weighting. |
| [Roughness (Daniel & Weber)](https://zhenxianli.github.io/LISQM/metrics/roughness-daniel-weber.html) | [Daniel & Weber (1997)](https://zhenxianli.github.io/LISQM/standards.html#ref-daniel-weber-1997) | `Roughness.roughnessDW` | available | not stated | Calls `roughness_dw` of MoSQITo 1.2.1. |
| [Sottek Hearing Model roughness](https://zhenxianli.github.io/LISQM/metrics/roughness-ecma-418-2.html) | [ECMA-418-2:2022 (2nd ed.)](https://ecma-international.org/wp-content/uploads/ECMA-418-2_2nd_edition_december_2022.pdf) | `Roughness.roughnessECMA` | available | not stated | Calls `roughness_ecma` of MoSQITo 1.2.1, whose bibliography cites ECMA-418-2:2022. |

## How it was validated

As reported by the project; LISQM has not run the code. Two implementations that agree can still share the same error.

The project does not say how any of these were validated.

## Notes

- `requirements.txt` pins `mosqito==1.2.1`; PsychoBox itself states no standard editions.
- Also does recording and binaural playback correction. An install guide and a tutorial (PDF) are in the Documentation folder.
- Listed as an end-user application, although its metric values come from MoSQITo. Wrappers that are neither an application nor an established library are recorded in `data/ignored.yaml` instead.

## Before you rely on it

- All metric values come from MoSQITo 1.2.1, whose ECMA-418-2 functions follow the 2nd edition (2022), two editions behind the current one.
