# AMT

> Part of [LISQM](https://zhenxianli.github.io/LISQM/) (List of Implementations of Sound Quality Metrics), a list of open-source implementations of psychoacoustic metrics. Data as of 2026-10-28. Web page: https://zhenxianli.github.io/LISQM/projects/amt.html

MATLAB/Octave toolbox of auditory models for reproducible research. Its loudness models include the Moore–Glasberg models for stationary sounds (`moore1997`, `chen2011`), time-varying sounds (`glasberg2002`) and binaural loudness (`moore2016`).

- **Full name:** Auditory Modeling Toolbox
- **Repository:** https://sourceforge.net/p/amtoolbox/code/
- **Homepage:** https://amtoolbox.org
- **Language:** MATLAB, Octave
- **Kind:** Library/Toolbox (Functions to call from your own code: a Python package, a MATLAB toolbox, or a C, C++, C#, Rust or Julia library.)
- **Group:** established (Described in a publication, used by others, or written by the authors of the model, with more than a year of history. A widely used toolbox for auditory modelling that also includes some psychoacoustic functions.)
- **Licence:** GPL-3.0 — SourceForge lists the licence as GPLv3. The COPYING file of release 1.6.0 says that most files are under GPL 3.0 and some under other licences, each file stating its own; the headers of the loudness models (moore1997, glasberg2002, moore2016) allow version 3 or any later version.
- **Package:** package `amtoolbox` (https://sourceforge.net/projects/amtoolbox/files/)
- **Latest release:** 1.6.0 (2024-10)
- **Last commit:** 2026-06-14 (active)
- **Maintainers:** AMT Team, Acoustics Research Institute (Austrian Academy of Sciences)
- **AI assistance:** not stated

## What it implements

| Metric | Edition | Functions | Status | Validation (as stated) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| [Moore–Glasberg loudness](https://zhenxianli.github.io/LISQM/metrics/loudness-moore-glasberg.html) | [Chen et al. (2011)](https://doi.org/10.1016/j.heares.2011.08.001) | `chen2011` | available | standard or paper data | Listed as "CHEN2011 - Fast excitation pattern estimation". |
| [Moore–Glasberg loudness](https://zhenxianli.github.io/LISQM/metrics/loudness-moore-glasberg.html) | [Moore, Glasberg & Baer (1997)](https://aes2.org/publications/elibrary-page/?id=10272) | `moore1997` | available | standard or paper data | Listed as "MOORE1997 - Loudness model for stationary signals" in models/Contents.m. |
| [Time-varying loudness (Moore–Glasberg–Schlittenlacher)](https://zhenxianli.github.io/LISQM/metrics/loudness-moore-glasberg-time-varying.html) | [Moore et al. (2016)](https://doi.org/10.1177/2331216516682698) (binaural) | `moore2016` | available | not stated | Listed as "MOORE2016 - Binaural loudness model". The header says Josef Schlittenlacher provided the original implementation for the AMT in 2018, from code written for ANSI S3.4-2007 and ISO 532-2:2017. |
| [Time-varying loudness (Moore–Glasberg–Schlittenlacher)](https://zhenxianli.github.io/LISQM/metrics/loudness-moore-glasberg-time-varying.html) | [Glasberg & Moore (2002)](https://aes2.org/publications/elibrary-page/?id=11081) | `glasberg2002` | available | standard or paper data | Listed as "GLASBERG2002 - Loudness model for time-variant signals". |

## How it was validated

As reported by the project; LISQM has not run the code. Two implementations that agree can still share the same error.

- [Moore–Glasberg loudness](https://zhenxianli.github.io/LISQM/metrics/loudness-moore-glasberg.html), Chen et al. (2011): standard or paper data
  - Has the experiment script `exp_chen2011`; AMT's experiment scripts reproduce the results of the publication they are named after.
- [Moore–Glasberg loudness](https://zhenxianli.github.io/LISQM/metrics/loudness-moore-glasberg.html), Moore, Glasberg & Baer (1997): standard or paper data
  - AMT's experiment scripts (`exp_…`) reproduce published results; this model has `exp_moore1997`.
- [Time-varying loudness (Moore–Glasberg–Schlittenlacher)](https://zhenxianli.github.io/LISQM/metrics/loudness-moore-glasberg-time-varying.html), Moore et al. (2016): not stated
  - There is no `exp_moore2016` experiment script on the develop branch.
- [Time-varying loudness (Moore–Glasberg–Schlittenlacher)](https://zhenxianli.github.io/LISQM/metrics/loudness-moore-glasberg-time-varying.html), Glasberg & Moore (2002): standard or paper data
  - Has the experiment script `exp_glasberg2002`; AMT's experiment scripts reproduce the results of the publication they are named after.

## Notes

- Releases are published as downloads on SourceForge (`amtoolbox` and `amtoolbox-full`); the git repository's default branch is `develop`. The SourceForge project page mentions no GitHub or GitLab mirror.
- Also contains `bramslow2004`, a loudness model considering hearing loss (AUDMOD), with the experiment script `exp_bramslow2004`; it has no reference entry in this list.
- Neither the develop branch nor release 1.6.0 has a roughness, fluctuation strength, sharpness, tonality or annoyance model (`osses2021` is a monaural perceptual-similarity model).
- Python ports of some of its loudness models exist: [torch_amt](https://github.com/StefanoGiacomelli/torch_amt) (`glasberg2002`, `moore2016`) and [NumpyLibforPsychoAcoustic](https://github.com/Ryrybros/NumpyLibforPsychoAcoustic) (`moore1997`, `glasberg2002`). There is no official Python package (amtoolbox and pyamtoolbox are not on PyPI).
- The validation entries rest on AMT's design: each `exp_…` script is meant to reproduce figures of the model paper. The scripts' output was not checked for this list.
